The last hometime as caretaker locks up St Mary's High School
SILENCE fell on the classrooms and corridors of a once-bustling Grimsby school when it officially closed yesterday.
Staff pulled down the shutters at St Mary's Catholic High School for the final time - marking the end of an era for thousands of pupils who studied there.

Caretaker Jon Moore looks out of a classroom for the last time.
St Mary's, in Wootton Road, on the Nunsthorpe Estate, first opened its doors to staff and students in July 1966.
It was earmarked for closure by education bosses at North East Lincolnshire Council because of dwindling pupil numbers.
St Mary's caretaker Jon Moore, 40, of Heneage Road, said the closure was a "tragic waste" of the school premises.

The main corridor at St Mary's Catholic High School stands empty.
As reported, St Mary's pupils will join those from the former Matthew Humberstone CofE school at the new St Andrew's College, in Cleethorpes, this Friday.
The new joint-church school will be housed in the Matthew Humberstone Upper School building, after Building Schools For The Future cash – which had been allocated for a new, purpose-built facility – was withdrawn as part of sweeping Government cuts.

“a sad day indeed..
our children will not be following from st mary's primary to st andrews as the fundament catholic school values will not be there..
read st andrews website its all about christian stuff .. happy clappy times to be had i bet .. no where does it mention catholic values! only a section saying x amount of places will be available to catholic children..
how can that be a joint faith school? it simply isnt ..
trying to get rid of the catholic faith within grimsby upon the education of the 11+
my kids will be attending a different school .. not following to st andrews from st marys primary..
bus services gone.. senior school gone.. what next the altars torn out of the heart of catholic churches?”

“Ex pupil,
And don't forget his tales of foreboding and woe at Assembly when he, quite straight-faced and sullen, recounted the time he had actually seen a pupil's eye hanging on his cheek, attached only by the optic nerve, after having been hit in the face by a snowball* / firework* / - insert topical item*

“I don't think St Mary, who was an ardent supporter of religious intolerance would be happy at the school which bears her name being closed and turned into a 24 hour strip club. She fought battles on many fronts to promote atheism and to have her name sullied in this way and to have curvaceous nymphs gyrating on pole etc in a building of such historic significance certainly plays heavily on my mind. When I think of what may happen in that place and the numerous girls acting provocatively it is very hard.”

“It really annoys me when a journalist and a newspaper cannot accurately report basic facts in one of its stories.
I will say again, as this is not the first time that the reason given for the closure of Saint Mary's Catholic High school has been reported incorrectly. The school voluntarily agreed to close itself after negotiations at diocesan and local levels, which I was a part of as chair of governors of the school, resulted in an agreement to form a new joint church school; leading to the closure of both Saint Mary's and Matthew Humberstone School.
Saint Mary's did NOT suffer from falling numbers. Quite the reverse in fact. With an annual intake of 75 pupils it regularly received 125 applications! It had been oversubscribed for many years. And in the year just ended in July it achoeved a record best ever set of GCSE results. A remarkable testimony to the pupils themselves and to the dedication and devotion of the teachers, staff and head of the school.
The fact is that the governors of the school and local Catholic community allowed Saint Mary's, a school they greatly treasured, to be sacrificed for what, speaking personally, I certainly hoped would give rise to a NEW school that would prove to be both an excellent school and great Christian witness to the community of North East Lincolnshire.
Hope springs eternal!”
