Successful local football manager
Norman Shackleton, a leading figure in Grimsby’s sporting community, died on Christmas Eve, 2008, aged 73.
He was involved in local football management for 33 years, following stints playing for Grimsby Cold Stores and YMCA in the Grimsby Sunday League.
Mr Shackleton ran a team in the Grimsby Intermediate League for Clee Juniors before managing Blundell Juniors.
His five Blundell teams won numerous trophies throughout the region, with players also touring in Scotland, Belgium, Holland and Sweden.
Mr Shackleton also took a team into the Grimsby and District Saturday League, winning Divisions Four, Three and Two before progressing to the Lincolnshire League, which they won in their first full season.
They subsequently won the Challenge and Lincolnshire League titles in their second season, the first time the latter had been won locally for 22 years.
He was involved in the Grimsby Sunday League with Partizan, Old Clee and Station Athletic, before leukaemia led to his retirement from the game.
