'Bring me back - or you cop for it'

Friday, November 21, 2008, 09:00

HAVE you seen the cardboard cop?

The 2D version of PCSO Danny Fleming has been stolen from Tesco – just three days after it was installed.

The life-size cardboard cut-out was taken from the Victoria Street store on Wednesday – the same day a story about it appeared in the Grimsby Telegraph.

Officers believed that the cut-out would be a deterrent to shoplifters – but instead, it became a target for them.

Danny will now be working with other officers to try and find himself.

Humberside Police spokesperson James Cartwright said: "The cut-out was in place to assist in introducing PCSO Fleming to those who may not yet know him.

"Although the theft of the cut out suggests that PCSO Fleming is in popular demand, the actions of those who did this will not be tolerated.

"What may have seemed like a silly prank at the time, could see those responsible being punished for their actions.

"Local officers are working with the store staff in a bid to identify who has taken it. We would ask anyone with information about it to come forward."

The topic sparked debate on www.thisisgrimsby.co.uk, with many users predicting that the cut out would be stolen.

Martin Wint, of Cleethorpes, said: "I bet someone nicks the cardboard cut-out!".

Alex, of Grimsby, added: "I agree, it's going to get stolen. It's a big sign saying 'steal me if you want to rebel'."

A spokesperson for Tesco said: "We are disappointed that certain individuals have taken pleasure in stealing something that had been put in place to introduce the community support officer to our customers."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Humberside Police on 0845 6060222.

Can anything be a deterrent like a real police officer?
