GRIMSBY shopkeeper George Pillai has vowed to carry on serving his customers – despite being subjected to more than 40 crimes against his business.

The owner of Alexandra News, in Alexandra Road, Grimsby – prosecuted in a "wholly exceptional" case for defending himself – said it will be business as usual.

He has invested more than £4,000 on CCTV and security, which includes a 24-hour link to a police rapid response team.

The 40-year-old father-of-three said: "I am determined to carry on the business and make it a success.

"We have had many heartaches because of all the offences against us. That was why I reacted. I had been patient up till then but my family was with me and I had to protect them.

"Sometimes in a moment you do not have time to think of what the law states and the consequences.

"Anyone would have done the same. I know now it is the first and last time I react like this."

"From now on we have to abide by the law. We have installed 16 cameras inside and outside the shop to catch offenders.

"Everyone knows the cameras are on all the time."

As reported, Mr Pillai's business has been attacked by gangs throwing stones and shoplifters have been caught in his shop.

Mr Pillai added: "We have invested a lot on security.

"We are Christians and God has given us strength to carry on the business. He gives us protection. We are not frightened."
