Laceby bypass speed camera set on fire

Wednesday, May 27, 2009, 09:00

VANDALS have torched a speed camera on the Laceby Bypass for the second time in months.

One of the cameras was set alight in the early hours of Monday – just five months after it was targeted by arsonists.

Although the cameras on the stretch of the A46 are not currently in operation, the act of vandalism has angered council officials and parish councillors.

Coun Martin Greenbeck, the chairman of Laceby Parish Council, said: "All vandalism is to be despised, especially when it is done to safety equipment.

"If people don't agree with the speed camera, this is not the way to show it.

"The parish council has always been of the opinion that we need two roundabouts at the entrances to Laceby and for the entrances to be closed. However, we know that is an expensive route to go down."

Dave Poucher, principal traffic engineer for North East Lincolnshire Council, said: "The recent vandalism does nothing to prevent Police enforcement of the speed limit on the Bypass. This continues to be able to be undertaken using mobile cameras.

"Acts such as this do nothing to improve the safety of anyone using the By-pass. Given the tragic history of fatal and serious collisions at this junction you have to question the reasoning behind such action."

The cameras on the bypass were the first fixed speed cameras installed in North East Lincolnshire – the first step in a £100,000 council scheme to cut road deaths on the notorious stretch of the A46.

One of the cameras was set alight by arsonists on New Year's Eve last year.

And firefighters from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service were called out once again, at 1.45am on Monday.

A spokesperson for the Humberside Safety Camera Partnership said: "This is mindless vandalism which can put peoples lives at risk."

Anyone with information about the latest incident is asked to contact Humberside Police on 0845 6060 222.
