Pair win Grimsby In Bloom contest
Jane Stephenson, of David Street, and her son, John, will be getting stuck into their prize – a new allotment. The pair have won the plot at Peakfields allotments for a year, together with seeds and tools to cultivate the plot.
As reported, Grimsby In Bloom teamed up with North East Lincolnshire Council's allotment department, which kindly agreed to provide a plot, rent-free for the year, on either the Winchester or the Peaksfield sites in Grimsby.
It will be rotavated, free of charge, thanks to the council's parks and open spaces department, which will also provide the basic tools necessary for a year's harvest.
Jane said: "It's great to get our own plot. I've never had a plot before and I'm a bit new to it, but we're really looking forward to getting stuck in and hopefully we will be able to grow some lovely fruit and vegetables. I also like flower arranging, so we may be able to grow some flowers too."
Grimsby In Bloom's Ernie Brown said: "There are many plots still available and I'd urge anybody to get out and get gardening.
"It's a great achievement when you grow your own meals, and it also keeps you very fit."
Jane won the competition by entering a poetry tie-breaker and came up with this poem:
Let's bring Grimsby back into bloom,
As we leave behind the doom and gloom,
An allotment makes all our dreams come true.
