Reunion celebrates 20th anniversary

Friday, October 17, 2008, 09:00

DIG out your West Marsh passport and come along to the party!

The West Marsh Reunion is celebrating its 20th anniversary next month, with a 1960s-themed knees-up at the Bird's Eye Club, Grimsby.

The first reunion was held on November 1, 1988, at the Winter Gardens, in Cleethorpes, to bring together members of the West Marsh community who had been dispersed during the redevelopment of the 1960s.

Co-organiser Jeff Cutler said: "Armstrong Street School closed in the early 60s, and everybody was uprooted to Hereford. The houses came down and the whole community was dispersed all over the place.

"We kept bumping into each other around town, we decided to have a knees up, and we are still doing it today. It was a very tight community."

Entertainment will be provided by local acts Alan Hill and Sean B.

Jeff said: "Alan is a good local lad, and Sean has two or three generations of family from the West Marsh, so we have presented him with an honorary West Marsh passport."

A thousand passports were printed in 1992 to help raise money for local charities. You will be able to get in without a passport, but Jeff is urging everyone who has one to bring theirs along.

He said: "There's only a few left and they've become quite a collectors item.

"We've gone from about 2,000 people to about 100, but we still get a great atmosphere. We will continue as long as the people want us to carry on."

Come along

The West Marsh 20th anniversary reunion is at the Bird's Eye Club, Ladysmith Road, Grimsby at 7pm on Saturday, November 1. Tickets are £5 including pie and pea supper. Contact Jeff Cutler on 07949408193.
