Shadow Health Secretary praises Telegraph's sex survey

Tuesday, May 26, 2009, 09:00

THREE live debates, two weeks of continuous coverage and one issue: Sex.

Our Let’s Talk About Sex campaign has got everyone talking about the things that have a significant impact on our community – from underage sex, to STIs, teen pregnancy, education and even drug and alcohol use.

And now it has received Government backing.

Shadow Health Secretary Norman Lamb has praised the Grimsby Telegraph’s campaign, saying our comprehensive – and often frank – coverage is a “bold” move.

It comes as more than 500 Telegraph readers – both adults and young people – took part in our Let’s Talk About Sex survey, one of the most comprehensive polls of attitudes to and knowledge of sex. Mr Lamb, also a Liberal Democrat MP, said: “Recent figures show just how crucial it is that young people in particular understand these issues.

“There has to be action on every front against the growing problems of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

“It (the campaign) is a bold and very welcome move by the Grimsby Telegraph and the paper deserves congratulations for talking about sex in such an open way.”

Health chiefs have joined in with Mr Lamb to praise the work of the campaign in doing what it set out to do: Get people talking about sex. It also saw 341 adults and 241 young people take on the challenge of completing our sexual health survey, helping to give health professionals a greater understanding of the issues that need to be addressed.

Simon Rigg, a spokesman for Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The campaign was something that needed to be done.

“The Grimsby Telegraph is an ideal vehicle to get big issues out into a large percentage of the population and it’s the prime vehicle we use as an organisation to ensure key messages get out into the public – and this is one of those key messages.”
