VIDEO: Residents feared the worst following incident at Lindsey Oil Refinery

A BODY was found late last night at the scene of yesterday’s explosion and fire at Lindsey Oil Refinery.

An emergency services spokesman confirmed the tragic news had been broken to the man’s family.

It had been reported earlier that a 24-year-old Grimsby refinery worker had been “unaccounted for” as fire crews battled the blaze, which had broken out at noon yesterday.

It is the second death on the Humber Bank this year. Paul Doyley, 48, of Immingham, was killed in an explosion at the Millennium Inorganic Chemicals plant in Stallingborough in March.

As reported, hundreds of terrified residents claim they were left fearing the worst, as 20ft flames and smoke were seen billowing from the Humber Bank refinery.

These pictures, sent in to us by readers, show the incident – which saw two men injured – at Lindsey Oil Refinery yesterday and allowed us to tell the whole story on www.thisisgrimsby.co.uk as it happened.

However, those living in the shadow of the refinery today said this information was far greater than the details provided to them.

Concerned readers said they had heard no warning alarm and had been given no official information, leading to calls for a radical overhaul of Humber Bank safety procedures.

Diane Evans, a South Killingholme parish councillor, said: "I think it is absolutely disgraceful that this community is left in the dark time and time again over safety precautions. There were a lot of people in the village who took it upon themselves to evacuate their homes because they were not getting any information."

LOR has assured the public that all its safety procedures were carried out correctly.
