A potted history of the store

The first Woolworths store in the area opened on Cleethorpe Road, Grimsby, in 1912 and traded for 13 years.

A 4,174sq ft store opened on Freeman Street on April 24, 1925, and welcomed 9,000 people through the doors in the first day and a half.

However, it closed in 1984 with the loss of 28 jobs.

The Victoria Street store, was opened in September 1957.

It was fully modernised in 1971, and again in 1982.

A further £400,000 overhaul of the 13,000sq ft store took place in 1993.

Plans were announced to open a Big W store on Victoria Street in 2004 but, although work on the site was completed, it never opened. It became a Tesco Extra.

In November, 2008, Woolworths went into administration.

Just one month later, administrators Deloitte announced that all 807 stores would close by January 2009 if no buyer could be found.

No buyer was found, and the Grimsby store closed on Saturday.
