Probe continues into death of woman after Ross Castle fall
The woman, aged 64, is believed to be from Cleethorpes, though her identity is yet to be confirmed. Her death is not being treated as suspicious.
She was discovered at the base of the monument by the Cleethorpes Beach Safety Team at about 11.30am and attempts were made to revive her.
However, she was confirmed dead on arrival at the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, Grimsby.
Speaking at the scene, Sgt Dave Heard said: "We received a report at 11.39am that a woman had fallen from Ross Castle."
He added that officers were speaking to witnesses to try to establish what had happened.
Det Insp Andy Maultby said: "Officers are pursuing a number of enquiries in the area. However, at this time we are not treating the incident as suspicious."
Jane Wood, co-owner of the Hawaiian Eye Cafe said the incident was "devastating".
She said: "We knew something had happened after emergency services went flashing past.
"I went to my brother’s ice-cream parlour to see if the staff were okay. There was a big police presence.
"It’s just devastating – I feel for the family of the woman who died.
"I understand the Beach Safety Team did everything they could to help, and did a good job.
"It’s a credit to them."
Rob Chalmers, resort manager for North East Lincolnshire Council, said: "We’re assisting police with enquiries.
"One of our officers assisted, and police are taking a statement."
He added he was going to wait until investigations by police were finished before any decisions were made about closing the Ross Castle site. The monument was reopened in June after a major refurbishment.
