A larger than life 'true star' of town

"GRIMSBY has lost one of its true stars."

Moving tributes have been paid to much-loved Grimsby singer Kay Boom, who has died aged 64.

Kay, who ran a music shop for many years, was a popular local figure and counted chart-topping singer Tony Christie among her friends.

She was also a long-time assistant and a great friend to Michael Dore, the professional singer from Grimsby who has achieved worldwide success.

He said: "She had an army of friends and a very loving family and was always ready for a laugh , was well loved by all those who knew her and is sadly missed. Grimsby has lost one of its true stars."

As reported in yesterday's Grimsby Telegraph, Kay passed away on September 29 at Bradley House nursing home. Her funeral was being held today at Grimsby Crematorium at 3pm.

Known for her warm personality and love of music, Kay was the head of the sheet music department of the long-established music shop Gough and Davy, which used to be in Victoria Street, Grimsby.

She also ran the Music And Words music shop in Lord Street with local pianist Paul Nicholson.

Throughout her career, she made many friends, including singer Tony Christie. He was appearing at the legendary Bunny's Place, in Cleethorpes, when she helped him find sheet music – a friendship that continued long after his appearance in the resort.
