WHILE your readers' photographs are always of a very good quality, I was, however, a little distressed to see the recent picture of a robin feeding from a net of fat balls.

As a bird lover, and one who has always had them myself, I know that fat balls should never be left in nylon mesh for birds to feed on, but transferred into a suitable hanging container. This is because small birds, such as robins, can easily catch their legs in the nylon mesh, in some cases even breaking them if they become entangled.

  1. BAD IDEA: One reader says putting food out for the birds in nets like this can be hazardous for small birds.

I hope you won't mind me pointing this out.

“Definatly agree ..we remove ours now as having a starling hanging with his tounge wrapped round in one. It wasn't pleasant thing to see or hear...thankfully a neighbour came to un ravel it and the starling seemed ok.”

“I am sure the reason they are sold in mesh bags,is. All the bird feeding people can save the bags, send them to The Wrangler so he can then stuff them in his gob.”

“I agree with the person who brought this matter up. Myself, I use fat/lard and a mixture of seed stuffed into a hoof. Secured out of reach of predators. I don't account for squirrels.”

“Then why are they sold in mesh bags if they are not suitable for use?”
