The pair will set off on Tuesday, August 21 and have taken up the task after the charity helped Wayne's father, Peter, 65, overcome his cancer fight.

The 36-year-old shopkeeper, of Chichester Road, Cleethorpes, said: "My dad had cancer in his lymph nodes and the people at Macmillan helped him win his battle last year.

"The charity helped him every step of the way and doing this bike ride is our way of saying thank you.

"We are hoping the journey to Spain will take us about 14 days.

"I have been cycling for many years and for us this is our summer holiday.

"I haven't been able to put as much practice in as I would like due to the weather.

"The goal is to travel 80 miles a day which I think is a good target.

"Neither of us speaks any Spanish but I have an app on my phone which can help us translate if we get lost.

"After we have completed this one I would like to do another one but maybe something even more adventurous.

"I have been putting charity pots in each of my four shops to try and raise as much money as possible."

Both cyclists are looking for sponsorship for their journey which will take them from Cleethorpes to Portsmouth and then on to Saint-Malo and finally to Santander, in Spain.

Although Wayne is an experienced cyclist, this is not the case for his partner Clare.

The 30-year-old teaching assistant from Cambridge Park School added: "I had never done a lot of cycling before but started about three months ago.

"Wayne roped me into it and I enjoy it a lot.

"The first 15 miles are the toughest for me but once I get past that I am OK. We have been planning the trip for about eight months and I wouldn't have believed I was going to do it a year ago.

"I know a lot of people that are suffering with all kinds of different types cancer at the minute so I want to help them.

"I am looking forward to the cycling but I am dreading the ferry from Portsmouth because last time I was on a boat I was really ill but hopefully the weather will stay fine for us the whole way there."

After arriving in Spain the couple will drive a van and their equipment all the way back to Cleethorpes.
