There can only be one Pub Idol 2008

Thursday, October 02, 2008, 08:37

AFTER nine heats, in which more than 40 competitors sang more than 80 songs, Pub Idol 2008 comes down to one night, 12 singers, 24 songs – and five judges.

Tonight, The Submarine hosts the grand final of our popular search for the region’s singing sensation, when we will find out exactly who is first among vocals.

As well as the coveted Pub Idol crown, the eventual winner will walk away with £500, and the chance to follow in the footsteps of last year’s winner Ashleigh Howard.

She has now secured a monthly residency at Cleethorpes’ Bar Babylon.

Tonight’s 12 contestants will be hoping to impress the panel of five judges – Pete Dixey, representing Pub Idol sponsors Poole’s Music, and musical theatre guru Emma McCutcheon, who have been on the panel for every round, the Grimsby Telegraph news editor Lucy Wood, Grimsby Auditorium’s general manager Diane Belding and local pub entrepreneur Paul Weeks.

And because it’s the final, the judges are expecting something a little bit special.

The Telegraph’s Lucy, herself no stranger to the stage, said: “I think the judges will have their work cut out deciding on a winner.”

And the Auditorium’s Diane  – who clearly knows a thing or two about what makes a successful live show, and was one of the judges at the Baracuda – added: “I am looking forward to the final being entertaining and performances of a professional standard.”

So, tonight’s 12-strong line-up – Sarah Lowe, Simone Litchfield, Yasmin Ellis, Tony Clark, Chris Thorpe, Rachel Harrington, Fiona Beasley, Ebony Reeve, Mark Stoneman, Amy Greetham, Michael Ray, and Martin Cole – will have to be at the top of their musical game if they’re going to challenge for the prestigious title of Pub Idol 2008.
