I remember Newby, Hicks and Cook, too
AFTER we published this photograph, Alban Harris, of Pennine Close, Immingham, got in touch.
He said: "I was delighted to see, for the first time, my old school, the Corporation Grammar.

swimming stars: Staff and prizewinning pupils of the Corporation Grammar School at their annual swimming meeting at Orwell Street Swimming Baths in 1934. Those at the back include K Dixon, Mr Todd, Mr Saunders, headmaster Mr Lister and C Chidwick (far right); among those in the centre are E Newby, Mr Abraham, B Newby, B Would, Madam Phillips (instructor) and Mrs Cowie (headmistress); Front row (from left): ?, L Fraser, ? and ?
"Mr C Chidwick was slightly out with his date of closure.
"I started there in 1939, but shortly after, the boys and girls had to be transferred to Flottergate chapel rooms, where I stayed until leaving in 1946.
"Owing to the war starting, both schools in Town Hall Square were taken over by the police and fire service.
"The headmistress, Mrs Cowie, who lived at 10 Connaught Avenue, was still there when I left at the age of 14. The school did return to Town Hall Square, but closed shortly after.
"The pupils I remember are R Newby (who was possibly related to the two others shown on your photograph), my cousin Martin Hicks and Brian Douglas (who are sadly deceased), Paul Upton, Sandra Cook, the Brannon sisters, Carol Warburton and Betty Rushby.
"It would be great to see any other photographs that may be available."
