THIS week's Then And Now features a long-gone Lincolnshire windmill in North Somercotes, writes Dave Strickland.

The village is about three miles beyond Grainthorpe on the A1031 road from Grimsby to Mablethorpe.

  1. Then: North Somercotes windmill.

    Then: North Somercotes windmill.

  2. Now: The possible former site of the windmill.

Now: The possible former site of the windmill.

The subject shown here proved problematic, in that it has proved hard to confirm its location with respect to the present appearance of the village.

The present-day view is believed to show the same view as that of the windmill. This is Churchill Road, looking north. It appears that the buildings in both are the same ones, but if so, the one in the farther background has been remodelled over the years.

A walk around the village did not produce any more suitable candidate for the job.

In any case, what an excuse to show the magnificent six-sailed windmill, which once graced North Somercotes.

Can Bygones readers confirm where the windmill used to be?
