What's On (Oct 19-21): Elijah by Mendelssohn, Louth Victorian Fayre and more

Grimsby Philharmonic Society begins its 2012/2013 season with a performance of Elijah by Mendelssohn at Central Hall on Saturday.

Elijah, which was last performed by the Philharmonic in 1998, ranks among the highest in the repertoire of sacred music, with works such as Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s St Matthew Passion.

Louth’s Victorian Fayre is set to be even bigger now it is Britain's favourite market town.

The third annual Victorian Family Fayre, hosted by the Louth Town Partnership, will take place on Sunday featuring over 100 stalls offering a wide variety of arts, crafts and food sellers.

The Grimsby Gala Variety Show will take place on Saturday in aid of St Andrew’s Hospice.

The event, which will take place at The Beachcomber in Humberston, will include dancers, The Illusionists, singers Kim Gee, Bernard Kendall and Danielle Jade, and bands The MEDC Orchestra and Capitol Jazz Band.

The Wolds Words Festival continues this weekend with a headline appearance from five-time Olympian Mark Foster.

The six-time world champion swimmer will host an evening talk on Saturday about his sporting career, as well as giving his views on the London Olympics.

Anthony Pinel, familiar as the Organist and Master of the Choristers at Grimsby Minster, will be performing an Organ Recital at Central Hall on Sunday.

He will play the 3-manual organ, featured during the previous evening’s performance of Elijah, for a programme of music offering wide appeal.

The Scunthorpe Little Theatre Club is currently performing Terry Pratchett’s Guards, Guards at the Plowright Theatre.

This exciting production tells the story of Ankh-Morpork city guards, led by Captain Vimes who ,with new recruit Carrot Ironfoundersson, are removed from their comfortable rut when the Elucidated Brethren of the Ebon Night call a dragon to the city.

Folk star Seth Lakeman is appearing at the Baths Hall in Scunthorpe on Saturday.

Seth, who has three Top 40 albums under his belt, will be performing songs from his new album ‘The Barrel House’ in what will be his only show in the Yorkshire and Lincolnshire region on his 16 date tour.

A hilarious combination of puppet show, natural history and comedy cabaret comes together in The Sea Show at Louth’s Riverhead Theatre on Sunday.

Children and adults of all ages can join in the fun and celebrate the sea with tall tales, silly slapstick, fantastic facts, live music and songs.

Burden of Paradise - featuring Helen Watson, Snake Davis, Dave Bowie and Mark Creswell - bring their breathtaking skill to Barton’s Ropery Hall on Friday.

After producing 1994’s The Nightmare Before Christmas and directing 2005’s Corpse Bride, Tim Burton returns to stop-motion animation with Frankenweenie.

Based on his 1984 short film of the same name, the film tells the ghoulish story of young Victor who harnesses the power of science to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life only to face unintended, sometimes monstrous, consequences.

Frankenweenie is showing daily in 2D and 3D at cinemas in northern Lincolnshire including Parkway Cinema in Cleethorpes, Vue cinema in Scunthorpe and Playhouse Cinema in Louth. Check with your local cinema for times.
