Same sex marriage bid opposed by Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers
CLEETHORPES and Immingham MP Martin Vickers cemented his stance against gay marriage on the BBC's Sunday Politics show.
Appearing on the Yorkshire and Lincolnshire segment of the programme yesterday, Mr Vickers debated the issue with gay marriage supporter, Hull North MP Diana Johnson.

The issue of whether or not to allow gay marriage in churches is set to be voted on in the commons tomorrow.
Mr Vickers said: "I will be opposing the proposals because they are not in any party's manifesto and I don't think we have a mandate for it.

"The majority of younger people are much more relaxed about it but I believe those over 50 feel very uncomfortable with it.
"I don't think we should railroad through such social change without a mandate."
He added that up to 50 per cent of Tories are expected to vote against the plans.
"I don't think it is a party issue," said Mr Vickers, "I think if you went out onto the streets of Cleethorpes of Immingham you would find similar views."
However, he added: "I rather suspect it will be passed, which I think is regrettable."
Mr Vickers also shared his views on insurance premiums for flood victims and plans for high-speed rail links to the north east.

“There's been lots of reaction to Martin Vickers - no to gay marriage - on Twitter including:
*Lovely as I'm sure Cleethorpes is, it's not top of my list of places to visit. Their MP doesn't endear me to go there.
*Who would ever want to go out to the streets of Cleethorpes?
*Also, Martin Vickers, you could stop your homophobic hate and sort out Cleethorpes, your very deprived constituency.
Don't think he has done himself or Cleethorpes any favours”

“I agree with 123xxx live and let live - what difference does it make?
It's not about politics or mandates surely it's all about the sanctification of love! Vickers said if the law is passed it would be 'regrettable' - indeed he will be feeling regrettable at the next election.”

“I am in a same sex relationship, my partner and I have almost been together 20 years and are planing a wedding, we hope the bill does go though Parliament, don't know what the problem is we are in the 21st century after all, it shouldn't be a issue, thought homophobic was a thing of the past.

“The equalities contract states that the Tories will consider allowing gay marriage, not that they will.”

“Personally I don't care whether gay people marry or not; and neither do I care if straight people marry or not (and any which diversity between). What I do think is wrong is forms ask if you're married, single, civil partnered etc. - so as soon as a person answers civil partner they immediately out themselves as being gay. We all know discrimination happens because it has been covered in the news so frequently, such as the religeous B&B owners who did not want a gay couple staying with them. So we also know as soon as a person 'outs' themselves on a form they may receive other discrimination.
What really bothers me though is Mr Vickers' stance on all of this. Most importantly is his political credibility in stating this is not a Tory manifesto. Mr Vickers, have you read Theresa May's 'Contract for Equalities' document published three days before the last general election? This appears to be directly contradictory of your position and posturing.”
