CLEETHORPES MP Martin Vickers will join more than 100 Conservatives to vote against Government plans to legalise gay marriage later today.

Although the Prime Minister strongly supports the move, reports suggest more than 120 Conservative MPs could oppose it, including some Cabinet ministers.

Mr Vickers, pictured, said: “I am opposed to it. I accept it’s a generational thing and younger people are more relaxed about it, but it wasn’t included in anyone’s manifesto.

“Such a major social change should at the very least be in a party’s manifesto. This should be allowed to evolve, but at the moment a large portion of the population is against gay marriage and that ought to be respected.”

The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill will enable gay couples to get married in both civil and religious ceremonies, assuming a church or religious organisation has given its consent.

It will also allow couples who had previously entered into civil partnerships to convert their relationship into a marriage.

MPs will have a free vote on the issue, which means their parties will not instruct them one way or another.

Despite the prospect of significant Conservative opposition, the Bill is expected to pass with support from most Labour and Liberal Democrat MPs.

See Wednesday’s paper for the vote result and reaction.

    “Who gives a toss?
Is this a Government ploy to distract us from important issues such as N.H.S.,child neglect, poverty and other issues effecting real peoples' lives?”
