Two Plus One champions of Louth Indoor Bowls Club Morning Triples league

TWO Plus One were confirmed as champions of the Louth Indoor Bowls Club's Morning Triples league after two emphatic victories.

They hammered Mix and Match 27-8, scoring a 'seven' on one end and then clinched the title with a 27-8 win over Greenfingers.

Rivals DeeJays were still in the hunt after totally destroying Bramleys in an amazing 43-3 scoreline but had to settle for the runners-up spot following a surprising 19-11 defeat against Mix and Match, who fought back from 7-10 behind.

The battle is on for third place with two points separating three teams. Bujiars took that spot albeit on shots difference from Oaks who they beat 23-5.

Mudlarks are fifth having suffered a 18-12 defeat against Oaks although they did well in their second game to beat Numbskulls 17-14. The wooden spoon will go either to Greenfingers or Bramleys. Just one point separates them with both having two games to play.

With the Friday Evening Pairs title having already been decided, the focus was on the runners-up spot with the two contenders playing each other and having the same number of points.

It proved a worthy contest but with Wendy White and Jack Goy leading 12-11m their opponents Barrie Robinson and Charlie Briggs grabbed a 'two' to edge in front and finished with a 'five' and a 'four' to ease to a 22-12 victory. The victors now have a two-point advantage with one round of games remaining.

Title winner Barry Southwell took a night off but substitute John Darnborough wasn't able to continue the champions' winning ways as he and Dave Gladding were well beaten by Veronica Hillier and Margaret Pycroft.

Paul Dunham maintained fourth place, helped by stand-in partner Tony Willoughby, but had to survive a late fightback by their opponents before winning 16-15. They had led 15-7 but Paul Hillier and Derek Farrington won four of the last five ends to nearly pinch it.

Grabbing one shot on the final end enabled Jackie Brothwell and Sheila Mlls to hang on to fifth place in a tight game against Keith Castledine and Nancy Ness, which finished 11 each.

Bottom duo Pete Goy and Gill Chesman produced a good performance against Mick Espin and George Chesman and led 9-3 and 13-11 but ran out of steam to lose 19-13.

'Pupil' Ruth Cullum gets the better of Games star Amy Monkhouse

TEACHER and pupil came face to face in Wigton – and it was the pupil who came out on top in the opening match when the might of England's Commonwealth Games bowls team came up against a North Select side.

Ruth Cullum, a former pupil of England star Amy Monkhouse at Tollbar BEC, hit top form in partnership with Holbeach ace Annalisa Bellamy on Saturday and the promising Lincolnshire duo upstaged Ellen Falkner and Monkhouse 9-7, 3-10, 3-2.

"They played very well," said Monkhouse. "They caught us before we had time to settle to win the first set and, although we got it together in the second set, anything can happen in a tie break and they pipped us 3-2."

Cullum and Bellamy won the national Under-25 pairs title two years ago and when they 'click' they are a formidable unit.

They gave a good account of themselves in the second round, losing the first set by just three shots at 10-7 and tying the second 6-6, and the England pair were relieved to get home without being subjected to another tie break.

England, who fielded their full Commonwealth Games side throughout the weekend, faced an entirely different team yesterday, when Falkner and Monkhouse chalked up a couple of confidence-boosting victories over Vicki Forster and Carole McClean.

Coming out with all guns blazing, they scorched to a 9-5, 11-4 win in the morning and followed up with an even more emphatic 9-2, 14-6 win after lunch.

"That was just what we needed," said Monkhouse. "The two close encounters with Ruth and Annalisa got us on our mettle and we really went for it against Vicki and Carole."

Across the green, in the six disciplines, England's 12-strong Games side suffered only two defeats in 24 matches, leaving performance director John Bell with a big smile on his face.

Commonwealth Games team v North Select at Wigton (England names first):-

MEN: Singles: S Tolchard bt C Gale 11-7, 10-2; bt Gale 7-4, 9-5; bt R Chisholm 8-5, 7-7; bt Chisholm 7-9, 10-3, 5-0.
Grimsby bowler Amy Monkhouse takes on 'pupil' Ruth Cullum

GRIMSBY bowler Amy Monkhouse is in Cumbria today as part of preparations for the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi next month.

She will carry England's hopes in the women's pairs with her old friend Ellen Falkner against a North Region Select team.

"The clash is one of our last get-togethers before the real thing, so excitement is mounting in the camp," admitted the 31-year-old Tollbar BEC teacher.

The North team put together to test the 12-strong England side includes two Lincolnshire players – Ruth Cullum from Cleethorpes and Annalisa Bellamy – who will face Falkner and Monkhouse twice in the pairs today.

Monkhouse knows both well – and is particularly acquainted with Cullum, whom she taught at Tollbar. On Sunday they face Cumbria's Vicky Forster and Carole McLean, from Yorkshire.

Two Plus One close in on Morning Triples crown

TWO Plus One took a couple of steps towards securing the Louth Indoor Bowls Morning Triples title with two solid victories.
First they polished off Bramleys 20-6 and followed up with a 15-9 win over Bujiars to give themselves a three-point cushion with three games to play.
Rivals DeeJays are not giving up though and also recorded two victories. Numbskulls were beaten 17-11 and Mudlarks lost out 25-3 when coming up against an in-form DeeJays skip.
There is also a close battle for third place with Oaks currently holding that spot after a 25-3 thumping of Numbskulls. Bujiars have nipped into fourth place, on shots difference thanks to a 9-8 win over Mudlarks in one of the tightest games in the summer league.
It's 'game on' at the bottom too with 'strongest' team Greenfngers boosting their chance of avoiding last place with a 16-8 win against third-bottom Mix and Match, who in turn stuffed next-bottom Bramleys 28-2. Only four points separate these three.
The Friday Evening Pairs title has been clinched by Barry Southwell and Dave Gladding after they eased to a comfortable win over Mick Espin and George Chesman.
Two pairs are locked on the same points in the fight for the runners-up spot. Barrie Robinson and Charlie Briggs have regained second place on shots difference after their last gasp 17-15 win over Keith Castledine and stand-in Pat Willoughby.
Wendy White and Jack Goy slipped to third following a 24-22 defeat against Brian Nash and Paul Dunham in another close encounter which went to the final end.
Pete Goy and Gill Chesman have one hand on the wooden spoon as they lost 21-9 to Jackie Brothwell and Sheila Mills and are now six points adrift with only three games to play.

Jonathan Darley of Clee BC rolls his way to Singles hat-trick

A MEMORABLE singles final saw Jonathan Darley of Clee BC seal a hat-trick of victories in the Singles at the close of the Grimsby Open Bowls Tournament.

On Finals Day, Darley began his quest for a third title with a semi-final clash against Clee BC rival Simon Dent, 22, who has held the Cleethorpes Open Rinks of Three title on two occasions

Darley – the Singles winner in 2003 and 2005, and Player of the Tournament winner at this year's Cleethorpes Bowls Open – held a 9-8 lead at the two-thirds stage, after the scores were level at 4-4 after seven ends.

The last third saw Darley up a gear, taking points from five of the six player ends to book his place in the final with a 15-9 victory.

The remaining semi-final was one of the closest and tensest contests of the week.

Hull bowler Tim Winter (West Park BC) was attempting to keep the silverware on the North Bank after last year's Singles winner Dennis Cheater, from Walkington, was unable to defend his title due to injury. Facing Winter was Tony Hebblewhite (Goxhill BC), who reached the Rinks of Three final.

Hebblewhite led 5-1 after six ends before Winter levelled the scores after ten.

And the match was still tied, at nine all, after 14 ends.

Winter then scored a sequence of 1:1:1:2 to lead 14-9 after 18 ends before Hebblewhite came back over the remaining three ends to score 2:1:1 – but he fell short and Winter reached the final by a 14-13 score.

In the Blue Riband finale, Winter opened well, taking a 6-2 lead after seven ends.

But Darley responded and turned the match around in his favour to lead 12-9 after 13 ends.

Winter then took 1:1:2:1 to lead 14-12 but after 20 ends the scores were level at 15 points each.

As the tension built around the green Darley edged ahead to 19-16 and within two points of the title after 24 ends, only for Winter to hit back to 19-18 on the 26th end.

But Darley scored single points on the next two ends to win 21-18 and secure a hat-trick of Grimsby Open Singles titles over the last eight years.

BILSTHORPE BC's Bob Stevens and Longden Terrace BC partner Janet Eames rolled their way to glory in the Open Pairs.

Stevens, the 2006 winner, and Eames, runner-up in the same year, were paired against tournament regulars Ted Marsh and Ian Ransby (Ordsall BC) in their semi-final

The experienced Stevens and Eames pairing were dominant from the start. They took points from ten of the first 14 ends to lead 18-6.

Their heavy scoring was decisive as they continued to build their lead and book a place in the final with a 24-10 win.

The second semi-final involved Tracy Dent and her 22-year-old son Simon (Clee BC) who were continuing their excellent form this year.

Simon, who reached the semi-finals of the Singles, had also held the Triples honour on two occasions.

And last year, Tracy's husband Paul was runner-up in the competition. She went one better, though, by winning the Mixed Pairs title at this year's Cleethorpes Bowls Open.

Facing Simon and Tracy were the Lincoln pairing of Ted and Iris Coulson (Eagle BC), who were also enjoying an excellent week having reached the Rinks of Three semi-final.

The Dents were quickly into their stride to lead 7-1 after eight ends before the Coulson's began to pull back the scores to trail 9-6 after 12 ends.

The turnaround continued with the Eagle BC pair cruising ahead to 14-9 after 16 ends before eventually taking their place in the final with a 17-10 victory.

The final turned proved to be another highly competitive and entertaining game.

After eight ends there was nothing to separate the four players, the scores tied at eight all.

After 13 ends Stevens and Eames had opened a 15-11 lead – but the Coulsons came back on the next two ends to trail 15-14.

The 16th and 17th ends proved decisive for Stevens and Eames. They took them 2:3 to lead 20-14.

And that was a sufficiently large margin for them to hold over the last four ends and they clinched the title 21-16.

The play-off for third and fourth places proved a classic encounter.

After 14 ends the pairs were tied at 10 all.

Marsh and Ransby inched ahead over the next three, taking 2:2:1 to lead 15-10.

But the Dents dug deep and pulled to 15 all over the next three ends.

And the deciding final end was taken by just a single shot, the Dents edging it to win 16-15.

BOB Stevens lifted the Player of the Tournament title at Grimsby Open Bowls week – but it was in doubt until the closing stages of Finals Day.

Bilsthorpe BC's Stevens, runner-up in 2006, lead the field after the semi-finals, but Ted Coulson of Eagle BC was also in contention.

Indeed, if Coulson had beaten Stevens in the Open Pairs final, he would have taken the Player of the Tournament title and his wife Iris would have finished runner-up. Stevens' victory in the Open Pairs final, however, saw him also bag the individual honour, with 51 points.

Coulson finished joint runner-up with Tony Hebblewhite third, on 42 points. Iris Coulson was a close fourth on 39 points.

The semi-finals were played on the Number Four green, with the afternoon's finals on the Number Two green.

Players throughout the tournament produced a high standard of play on all four competition greens – so credit is due to green keeper Ian Dye and his grounds staff for both performance and presentation.

Duo go one better to win Mixed Pairs title at Grimsby Open Bowls Tournament

THE culmination of the 2010 Grimsby Open Bowls Tournament provided some high quality games on Finals Day.

At the beginning of the day local players had an interest in all four competitions but, in contrast to June's Cleethorpes Open when all the titles were won by local players, only one of the four titles was taken by a player from the area.

First up on on finals day was the Rinks of Three competition and the first of the 18-end semi-finals saw previous semi-finalists Ernie Elkington, Neil Salmon and Lou Rice (Friskney BC) play last year's runners-up from Lincoln, Ted and Iris Coulson and Kevin Lewis (Eagle BC).

The Coulson's, having also booked a place in the Open Pairs semi-finals, opened the game strongly collecting four shots on consecutive ends to lead 12-1 after four ends.

Elkington, Salmon and Rice came back with 1:5:1 to trail 8-12 before the Coulson's and Lewis took 2:1 to lead 15-8 at the halfway stage.

After 15 ends, Elkington, Salmon and Rice had pulled back to trail 14-17 and continued their comeback by taking 2:1:1 on the last three ends to secure a place in the final by 18-17.

The second semi-final brought the 2006 title holder Harold Dixon, this year partnered by Tony Hebblewhite and Tony Gaytor (Goxhill/ Cemex BCs), against tournament regulars from Newark Robin Wallwin, John Wood and Chris Fry (Farndon BC) making it through to their first finals day appearance.

The first-half of the game was close with the Goxhill triple leading 8-7 after 10 ends.

Taking 1:-1:4:1 from the next four ends Dixon, Hebblewhite and Gaytor led 14-8.

The Farndon triple countered with four shots on the 15th end (12-14) before Dixon, Hebblewhite and Gaytor took 5:2 to book their place in the final by 21-12.

The final was played over 21 ends and was a highly entertaining finale to the competition played by two triples in top form.

After nine ends, the scores were level at six all and after 12 ends there was still nothing to separate the triples at eight apiece.

After 15 ends, Elkington, Salmon and Rice had established a 12-8 lead before Dixon, Hebblewhite and Gaytor took three shots to trail 12-11.

Having taken the mat on the 17th end with a single shot (13-11) Elkington, Salmon and Rice collected shots from the next three ends (1:2:2) to build an unassailable 18-11 score line and claim the 2010 title after a tense quality game.

The third/fourth place play-off was played over 18 ends and was one of the closest games of the day.

Wallwin, Wood and Fry took an early 7-2 lead after six ends but after the 12th end, scores were level at eight all.

Taking 1:2:2 from the next three ends, the Coulson's and Lewis took a 13-8 lead which they managed to hold in spite of the Farndon triple scoring on the last three ends (1:2:1).

It was not enough to stop the Eagle BC triple taking third place by 13-12.

Last year in the Mixed Pairs competition, Caroline Cullum and husband David (Kingsway Printers BC) took the title in a close encounter with David Rutt and Eva Dayes (Market Weighton BC) – holders of the title in 2007 and runners-up in both the 2009 Cleethorpes and Grimsby tournaments.

This year the draw brought the pairs together at the semi-final stage with Caroline Cullum partnered by father Gordon Peck, the pair having held the Cleethorpes Open title twice in recent years.

After 10 ends of the 21-end game, Rutt and Dayes had a 17-5 lead before Cullum and Peck produced some of their best bowls in the game taking points from five consecutive ends to pull back to 12-17.

The early scoring by Rutt and Dayes, however, proved decisive as points were shared from the next five ends to give Rutt and Dayes a 21-15 victory and a place in the afternoon's final.

The second semi-final brought the local pairing of Dave and Gwen Jarrett (Vikings BC) – making their first appearance at finals day – up against the mother and son pairing from Lincoln, Anita and Colin Barks (Eagle BC) who were 2006 runners-up and previous joint holders of the Player of the Tournament title.

The experienced Eagle BC pair took control of the first half of the game scoring from seven of the first nine ends to lead 14-3.

The Jarrett's, however, began to find the form which had brought them through the earlier rounds and came back strongly over the next eight ends to trail 13-16 after 17 ends.

The Vikings pair's fight-back was halted on the 18th end when the Bark's took a maximum four shots followed by three shots on the 19th end to record a 23-13 score and book their place in the final.

The final brought together two of the most consistent pairs in recent years.

Rutt and Dayes were attempting to go one better than last year's runners-up place, while Anita and Colin Barks had been runners-up in 2006.

After five ends, the Bark's had opened a 4-1 lead but Rutt and Dayes turned the score in their favour over the next five ends to lead 8-4 after 10 ends.

After the next six ends, the Barks had fought back to hold an 11-10 lead and after 19 ends still held a narrow 13-12 lead.

The last two ends however saw Rutt and Dayes come from behind to take 3:1 and claim the title for the second time by a 16-13 margin in what had been a top quality final.

The local pairs of Cullum and Peck and the Jarrett's played a highly competitive 21-end game to decide the third and fourth places.

After 11 ends, the Jarrett's held a 10-7 lead before Cullum and Peck turned what proved to be the decisive part of the game in their favour collecting 2:3:3 to lead 15-10.

The Jarrett's came back over the next six ends to level the scores at 17 each after 20 ends but were unable to stop Cullum and Peck on the final end as the Kingsway Printers pair collected two shots and third place by the narrowest of 19-17 margins.

Struggling Sussex succumb to Carr Lane

SUSSEX – needing good points results to lift their team clear of the Division One relegation zone – played a tough match against Carr Lane A in the Grimsby and Cleethorpes Triples League.

Rink scores were equal, but Carr Lane amassed useful total shots to take a 6-4 win, writes Barry Cammell

Sussex were at home to Blossom Way and the home team were only able to rescue one rink win thanks to the efforts of M Steer, N Dodsworth and N Jackson.

Blossom Way A, at home to Clee Bowls A had a tough match and Clee piled in more shots for a 7-3 result.

Four teams could be in contention for the champions spot in this division.

Scartho Clee are making their way up away from the relegation zone. Playing away at Manor Avenue to Grimsby B, Scartho turned in a good performance for a maximum points result.

Carr Lane, at home to Humberston A, won three rinks, but could not achieve the aggregate, which went in favour of Humberston, giving Carr Lane a 6-4 result.

Division One is still a four-horse race for top spot.

The four lower teams require serious points to take two of them clear of the relegation zone.

Grimsby A current leaders in Division Two, played Grant Thorold at home.

It was a closer game than the score indicates. Grimsby played a good game for a 8-2 points result. The rink of Pat Lewis, Jack Simons and Brian Gooderham secured one rink win for the visitors.

Caistor, chasing the league leaders, were at home to Clee Cons Rov and secured a 6-4 result.

From a closely-fought game, Clee Cons B suffered a 6-4 defeat, at home to Caistor.

Waltham Park A, a dark horse, in fourth position, played the league leaders at home in a shared points game, 5-5. The total shots were 61-61.

With fixtures running out, Barretts A need to put in a final spurt to clear the relegation zone.

In Division Three, Sussex Rec are making progress.

However, they fell to a strong Eastfield team, who secured a 8-2 points result.

Humberston B, away to Carr Lane B, played well for a 6-4 result. Humberston, currently third, are a team to watch.

Vikings are making their mark in this division and put on the pressure to obtain a 6-6 result in a very tight game against Sussex Rec.

Haverstoe, at home to Eastfield, could only secure one rink win by the efforts of L Skinner, J Hall and J Beaumont.

Haverstoe maintain a mid-table position.

In Division Four, Laceby A are in the driving seat.

They played away to Barretts B and achieved a 8-2 points result.

Waltham Park B have yet to make an impression in this division.

They played Blossom way B at home but could do little to prevent the visitors achieving a 8-2 result.

Laceby B versus Clee Bowls C was a very close game. Rink scores were equal, but Laceby took the aggregate for a 6-4 result.

In Division Five, Carr Lane C in their chase for top spot, dealt a devastating blow to Sussex Clee when they played at Carr Lane.

The home team put in a positive effort to obtain a 9-1 result against Sussex Clee, a contender for the title.

Clee Cons Thur played Humberston C at home.

Humberston, who have struggled this season, found Cons too strong on the day, leaving the home team with a 8-2 result.

Keelby versus Granby was a close game.

Total shots were close, but Granby did enough to secure a 6-6 result.

Granby played at home to Eastfield. The latter took the aggregate by three shots for a 6-4 result.

Sussex Clee, looking for second place, managed a 8-2 result (including a Hot shot score) in a closer game than the score reflects.

Meanwhile, on a sad note, I have to report the passing of a Barretts Bowling Club stalwart.

Douggie Bray, captain of the B Triples team, has died.

My thanks to Brian Patterson for keeping me informed.

On behalf of the Grimsby/Cleethorpes Triples League, I offer condolences to Douglas Norman Bray's family and Doug's many bowling friends at Barretts Bowling Club.

Mixed pairs gear up for the Grimsby Open Bowls semis

GRIMSBY Open Bowls Tournament continued to enjoy fine weather for the fourth day of competition, which featured the Mixed Pairs event.

The excellent condition of the greens at Sussex Rec encouraged some competitive play throughout the day.

The current Mixed Pairs title holder Caroline Cullum, this year partnered by father Gordon Peck (Kingsway Printers BC), who together previously held the Cleethorpes title in 2001 and 2003, are on course to retain their title – if they can repeat the result which they achieved in last year's final.

In Friday's semi-finals, the pair will come up against David Rutt and Eva Dayes (Market Weighton BC), who they beat in last year's final.

The game should be a close contest as Rutt and Dayes held the title in 2007 and were runners-up at both the 2009 Cleethorpes and Grimsby Open tournaments.

The second semi-final will feature – both of whom have already booked places in other semi-finals this week.

Their semi-finals opponents, the mother and son pairing of Anita and Colin Barks from Lincoln's Eagle BC, are no strangers to finals day, having been runners-up in the 2006 Mixed Pairs and joint Players of the 2005 Grimsby Open Tournament.

Triples serve up a real feast of thrilling action at Bowls Tournament

THE third day of the Grimsby Open Bowls Tournament produced some of the most closely-contested games of the week in the quarter-final stages of the Rinks of Three competition.

As the last eight triples battled it out on the green, it looked possible that a repeat of last year's final might be on the cards.

Defending champion Caroline Cullum (Kingsway Printers BC), this year partnered by father Gordon Peck and Terry Wood (Carr Lane BC), had a comfortable 11-3 lead at the halfway stage of the game against Harold Dixon, Tony Hebblewhite and Tony Gaytor (Goxhill BC).

The second half of the game, however, turned into a nail-biting affair as the Goxhill triple fought back to trail 15-14 on the last end which dramatically turned in their favour to secure them a place in Friday's semi-finals by a 16-15 margin – and they are the only local representatives left in the competition.

Hebblewhite is already through to Friday's Singles semi-final and currently leads in the Player of the Tournament competition.

In the semi-final, they will face Robin Wallwin, John Wood and Colin Fry (Newark – Farndon BC), who defeated the 2009 Cleethorpes Open runners-up and semi-finalists at this year's Clee Open, Martin and Kay Steer and Roy Buckingham (Sussex BC).

On the next rink, last year's runners-up, Ted and Iris Coulson and Kevin Lewis (Lincoln – Eagle BC) had a close game against Ray Maskell, Darrell Eames and Bob Stevens (Warsop – South Forest BC) narrowly securing a place in the semi by 18-13.

Ted and Iris have also made it through to a second semi, having booked a place in the Open Pairs semi-final.

Friday will see them face Ernie Elkington, Neil Salmon and Len Rice (Hucknall – Friskney BC) who had to battle hard to overcome a strong challenge from the triple of Victor Blake, Peter Cullum & Derek Burgess.

Rinks of Three

ROUND ONE: M. & P.

THE second day of the 2010 Grimsby Open Bowls Tournament featured the Open Pairs competition, with all four greens playing exceptionally well and strong competition throughout the day.

Grimsby Open Bowls week gets into full swing at Sussex Rec

THE opening day of the 2010 Grimsby Open Bowls Tournament held at the Sussex Recreation Ground produced some highly entertaining games.

Entries for this year's tournament were slightly down on previous years but, once again, it brought players to Cleethorpes from a wide area.

When opening the tournament, the Mayor of North East Lincolnshire, councillor Norma Lincoln welcomed players and complimented the ground staff for the preparation of both the greens and the recreation ground.

She then bowled the first bowl of the week to get the tournament underway.

The first competition of the tournament – the Singles – has produced one all local semi-final line-up which will see two Cleethorpes Bowls Club players battle it out for a place in the final.

Twice holder of the title in 2003 and 2005 and losing semi-finalist and Player of the Tournament at this year's Cleethorpes Open, Jonathan Darley (Clee BC), has continued his excellent form to reach the semi-final in which he will face 23-year-old club-mate Simon Dent.

Simon stepped in at the last minute to take the place of his uncle Allan Dent (Snr), who last year took the runners-up spot and continues the outstanding recent form of the Dent family.

With the defending champion Dennis Cheater (Walkington BC) injured and having to withdraw, another North Bank player, Tim Winter (Hull West Park BC), who reached the 2005 Cleethorpes Open semi-finals, will be looking to take the silverware back to Yorkshire.

Standing in his way will be Barrow on Humber bowler Tony Hebblewhite (Goxhill BC).

Results

(All Grimsby/Cleethorpes except were stated otherwise)

Cullums put on a good display at Royal Leamington Spa

A SMILING Caroline Cullum insisted that she was not disappointed after being denied a place in the last eight of the Bowls England women's national singles championship at Royal Leamington Spa.

Instead, the Cleethorpes player, who defeated her club-mate Amy Monkhouse and another Lincolnshire star Penny Strong in the first two rounds of the county championship, was delighted to have made it into England's last 16 on her first appearance in the singles.

"It would have been nice to have played in the quarter-finals, but I already achieved more than I expected – and I was holding a match lie against Lynne (Bowen), so I was nearly there."

Cullum trailed Bowen, a Commonwealth Games medallist and close friend of Monkhouse, by two shots (8-10) after 11 ends. But she took control mid-game and looked the likely winner when she raced into a 19-11 lead.

"I didn't do much wrong, but Lynne came back at me pretty strongly, and I was unlucky on one end, when, at 20-13, I went for the jack for game, and clipped the pot to one side, and dropped four shots," Cullum said.

Last week, the Cleethorpes star opened her bid for the national title with a splendid 21-4 dismissal of Lancastrian Joyce Jones, and she made further progress the following morning, beating Dorset ace Fran Hewett, 21-17.

"I was 11-17 down in that game," recalled Cullum.

"But I got my game together, and won in just four ends with two doubles and two trebles, so perhaps it was turn to be on the receiving end in the third round."

Ruth Cullum, pictured, who is a member of Cleethorpes and Perry Sports bowls clubs, teamed up again with Holbeach ace Annalisa Bellamy in an attempt to regain the Bowls England Under-25 pairs title at Royal Leamington Spa.

The Lincolnshire duo defeated Cumbria's Lucy Wallace and Stephanie Moffatt, 20-15, in the first round, were denied a place in the third round when they were edged out in a thrilling contest, 16-15, by Sussex starlets Keira Morley and Lorraine Kuhler.

The event was won by Somerset's Laura Holden and Stef Branfield, who beat the hotly tipped Devon duo Amanda Higginbotham and Sophie Tolchard, 22-7, in a high-quality final.

Natalie Melmore, who was controversially handed the Commonwealth Games singles berth that was expected to go to Cleethorpes ace Amy Monkhouse, justified her selection at the weekend by winning the Bowls England women's singles title.

The 21-year-old Melmore, from the Torquay Kings club in Devon, became the youngest-ever national four-wood singles champion, beating the record held by Monkhouse, who was 25 when she won the title in 2004.

CAROLINE Cullum was over the moon at Royal Leamington Spa after making a successful debut in the Bowls England women's national singles championship.

Cullum, the mother of junior international star Ruth Cullum, and a Cleethorpes club-mate of the high-flying Amy Monkhouse, took only 14 ends to defeat Lancastrian Joyce Jones 21-4, and will meet Dorset's Frances Hewett for a place in the second round.

"I've been to Leamington before, playing alongside Amy (Monkhouse) and Chris (Gowshall)," said Cullum. "But this is my first time in the singles, and I found it nerve-wracking – but I was pleased with the way I played."

"I was born into bowls, because all the family play," Cullum explained.

"My dad introduced me to the game, and I was playing at 13 – and I even met my husband playing bowls!"

Top triples are ready to roll at the Grimsby Open Bowls Week

THE draw for Grimsby Open Bowls Week's Rinks of Three competition has set-up some interesting matches.

After taking the runners-up spot at this year's Cleethorpes Open, Bill Johnson, Brenda Land and partner (Waltham BC) will play Martin and Kay Steer with Roy Buckingham (Sussex BC).

Having missed out on the hat-trick of triples titles at this year's Cleethorpes event, Allan Dent Snr and Allan Dent Jnr have recruited 19-year-old Russell Dent (Louth IBC) and face a tough opening game against George Hilton, Peter Noble and Ted Marsh (Ordsall BC).

Defending champion Caroline Cullum this year plays with father, Gordon Peck (Kingsway Printers BC), and faces a strong opening triple of Dennis, Margaret and Norman Cheater (Walkington BC).

Last year's runners-up Ted and Iris Coulson, and Kevin Lewis (Eagle BC), make the trip from Lincoln and open their crack at the title against Jenny Miskelly, B Altoft and J Sheppard (Haverstoe Pk).

Looking to repeat their success at this year's Cleethorpes Open will be Phil Bown, Jim McLachlan and Billy Howson (Kingsway Printers BC) who will play Dave and Jim Cole with Ian Jackson (Scartho Clee BC) in their opening game.

Other games in the first round which should produce strong competition are Tina Morris, Stan Short and Harold Dixon (Goxhill BC), winners of the title in 2006, against Margaret Upton, June Jenkin and Pat McKeon (Sussex BC).

Jonathan and Barry Darley with Bernard Gowshall (Clee BC) face Maureen Bush, Kath Reid and Martin Nurse (Healing BC), while Andy Marshall, Doug Rook and Ernie White (Habrough BC) play Norman Dodsworth, Eddie Edwards and June Smith (Sussex BC).

Matches in this competition take place on Tuesday at Sussex Rec.

In the Mixed Pairs competition, to be played on Wednesday, defending champion Caroline Cullum's husband, David, is unable to play this year.

Caroline has partnered up with father Gordon Peck (Kingsway Printers BC), with whom she has twice won the title in recent years.

If they are to repeat their previous success they will have to get past previous semi-finalists Marion Williams and Bill Pickering (Boultham Park BC Lincoln) in what looks to be one of the closest first round games.

Last year's runners-up at both the Cleethorpes and Grimsby Opens, David Rutt and Eva Dayes (Market Weighton BC), will be hard pressed in their first-round game against Janet and Darrell Eames (Longden Terrace BC).

This year's Cleethorpes Open title holder Tracey Dent (Clee BC) has yet to name her partner and will play Betty Cuthbert and Gordon Hall (Blossom Way BC).

This year's Cleethorpes runners-up, Jonathan Darley and Marion Burgess face previous semi-finalists Ernest Elkington and Rose Amos (Friskney BC).

David and Christine Hempsall holders of the Cleethorpes Mixed Pairs title in 2008 and 2009, will be looking to add a Grimsby title, but have to get past Mike and Julia Heath in the first round.

Other pairs who have featured in the latter stages of the competition in recent years are Tina Morris and Harold Dixon (Goxhill BC), runners-up in 2006, who play a strong pair in Terry Wood and Laura-Jane Duncan (Carr Lane BC).

Full draws online at www.sportgrimsby.co.uk/bowls

Grimsby Open Bowls Tournament set to roll into action

THE 2010 Grimsby Open Bowls Tournament will be taking place at the Sussex Recreation Ground, Cleethorpes, from Sunday until Friday next week.

Entries for this year's tournament are slightly down on previous years for various reasons, although many regular and new players will be making the trip to Cleethorpes – from both local clubs and from outside of the area.

After the perfect weather enjoyed at the Cleethorpes Open in June, organisers are hoping that the weather will stay fine to enable the expected high level of competition to be played without interruption to the schedules.

If the weather allows all four competitions to be completed up to the quarter-final stages on the scheduled days, there will be a Roving Jack Pairs competition held on Thursday afternoon – which is open to any players wishing to enter regardless of if they have played in the Tournament or not. Entries must be received at Sussex Recreation Ground by close of play on Wednesday.

The Open Singles Competition will be played on Sunday at Sussex Recreation Ground.

Defending champion Dennis Cheater (Walkington BC) opens his defence of the title with a first-round game against Steve Spencer-Davis (Grimsby BC) while last year's runner-up and runner-up in this year's Cleethorpes Open, Allan Dent Snr (Louth IBC), will have to wait to see who he meets in his first game which will be against the winner of the preliminary game between Norman Dodsworth (Sussex BC) or Brenda Land (Waltham BC).

Jonathan Darley (Clee BC) – twice holder of the title in 2003 and 2005 and losing semi-finalist and Player of the Tournament at this year's Cleethorpes Open – has a preliminary game against Pat Lewis (Grant Thorold BC).

The 2008 runner-up and losing semi-finalist at the Cleethorpes Open, Terry Wood (Carr Lane BC), plays Janet Eames (Warsop BC), who is a newcomer to the tournament.

Other strong contenders for the title will be John Belton (Waltham BC), winner of the 2009 Cleethorpes title. He faces Dave Jarrett (Vikings BC).

Another previous winner who always puts in a strong challenge is John Pask (Grantham BC). He plays the winner of Fred Mellows (Eagle BC Lincoln) or Sheila Childs (Barretts BC).

The draw for the Open Pairs Competition – to be played on Monday – sees defending champions Andy Parrott and Brian Eekhout (Vikings BC) begin their title defence against David Thomas and Bernard Sanderson (N Kelsey BC).

Other first-round games which stand out include the clash between the 2005 runners-up, Peter Clarke & Barry Cammell (Sussex BC), against 2009 Cleethorpes Open runners-up Jonathan Darley and Tony Musson (Clee / Blossom Way BCs) – a repeat of their first-round game in last year.

The 2008 title holders, Terry Wood and Robert Dalby (Carr Lane BC), will face the strong father and son pairing of Gary and David Langley (Scartho Clee BC).

More match previews at www.sportgrimsby.co.uk/bowls

Last year's runner-up, Allan Dent Snr, this year partners up with son Allan Dent Jnr (Louth IBC). They will be looking to advance towards another title on his CV if they can get past the winners of the preliminary game between Ann Johnson and Margaret Roberts (Habrough BC), and George Hilton and Peter Noble (Ordsall BC).

Last year's semi-finalist Caroline Cullum partners with daughter Ruth (Kingsway Printers BC), with whom she won the Triples last year and she has a tough opening game against the 2009 Cleethorpes Singles winner John Belton, partnered by Dave Nicholl (Waltham BC).

Strong challenges for the title will also come from outside of the area from players such as Anita and Colin Barks (Eagle BC), Bob Stevens and Janet Eames (Bilsthorpe BC), Ted and Iris Coulson (Eagle BC), Bill Bateman and Trevor Barlow (Alford BC) and Marion Williams and Bill Pickering (Boultham Park BC) – all of whom have figured in the latter stages of the competition in recent years.

Louth pair Two Plus One & DeeJays keep up Triples title battle

THE two-horse race at the top of the Louth Indoor Bowls Morning Triples league continues with Two Plus One holding a one-point lead over DeeJays.

The leaders only had one game last week but won it in emphatic style when toppling Oaks by 33-3.

DeeJays had two games ad won both thus closing the gap.

They did just enough to beat Bujiars 16-7 but had a far tougher game against bottom team Greenfingers and only won 11-8 thanks to a late flourish.

Mudlarks are unlikely to challenge the top two but remain third thanks to a comfortable 21-6 win over Mix and Match and a 13-13 draw against Bramleys which they really ought to have won.

Oaks are two points behind in fourth as they claimed a 20-9 win over Greenfingers after being 9-5 down at one stage.

Numbskulls had a good week with wins over Bramleys (14-10) and Mix and Match (16-10) to stay well clear of the bottom three.

Barry Southwell and Dave Gladding maintained a four-point lead at the top of the Friday Evening Pairs with a simple 24-6 win against Paul Hillier and Derek Farrington.

Barrie Robinson and Charlie Briggs needed a 'three' on the last end to rescue a 15-13 win against Veronica Hillier and Margaret Pycroft.

This gives them second place on shots difference ahead of Wendy White and Jack Goy who saw off a late challenge from Jackie Brothwell and Sheila Mills to win 20-15.

Mick Espin and George Chesman lost the chance to move into fourth spot when they were beaten 20-9 by Brian Nash and Paul Dunham.

This Friday sees the top two pairs face each other in what could be the title decider. It could be an unlucky 13th match for one pair.

Amy Monkhouse: Event hasn't been a complete disaster

AMY Monkhouse bounced back to mount an assault on the national women's triples title – after the disappointment of losing so heavily in the Bowls England Champion of Champions final.

Joined by Tracy Dent, and Amy's mum Christine Gowshall, Monkhouse was determined to finish the championships at Royal Leamington Spa on a high note. And she skipped the Cleethorpes trio to an impressive 24-16 win over Irene Everett, Dorothy Counsell and Eleanor Benvie from Bolton in Lancashire.

But there was more disappointment in store for the Lincolnshire champions, who came up against Heather Stapleford, Rose Castle and Shirley Page, from Baldock in Hertfordshire, in the second round.

Page, who will be 70 in December, helped her county win the Johns Trophy at the start of these championships, and defeated Monkhouse in the semi-finals of the two-wood singles on Wednesday, so the encounter gave the Grimsby ace an early chance of revenge.

It was not to be – although Cleethorpes took a 5-1 lead after five ends, and looked good when they led, 9-4, after eleven, Baldock hit back with a vengeance, scoring 13 shots to one over the next six ends – a haul that included a disastrous count of six on the 15th end.

It was Cleethorpes' turn to show defiance, but, although they reduced the deficit over the last three ends, they were unable to secure the count that would have enabled them to draw level, and the Herts trio moved through to the third round with a 16-13 victory.

Monkhouse, pictured right, who finished with a flourish, conjuring up two shots on the last end, said: "Of course it's disappointing, because that was our last chance of winning anything this year, but, when you look at what we have done in eight days, it hasn't been a total disaster."

She continued: "When all's said and done, I got to the final of the Champion of Champions, and mum and I lost in the final of the Mother-&-Daughter pairs – plus there were two semi finals, in the fours and two-wood singles, and mum got to the third round in the over 55 singles."

Amy Monkhouse defeated at the Bowls England championships

AMY Monkhouse failed in her bid to lift the Champion of Champions title at the Bowls England championships.

Despite having suffered a few disappointments during the first week of the big event, Monkhouse was hotly tipped to lift the Champion of Champions title for the seventh time in 13 years.

Prospects looked good as she swept past local hope Moira Parsons, 21-6, in the quarter-finals, and she made no mistake against England team-mate Jennie Groves, from Leicestershire, in the semi final, winning 21-12.

But, playing in her fourth match of the day, she turned in a below-par performance against England star Kath Hawes, who hit top form to win by an astonishing 21-3 scoreline.
