Top-two stalemate in battle for Grimsby Snooker Doubles League title crown
THE race for the Roy Ling Mutual Grimsby Snooker Doubles League Section A title is going down to the wire.
This week saw the top two teams face each other in the first of two successive encounters that could determine the destiny of the first-place trophy.
Dads & Lads, and Nats, have promotion in the bag but the pair are scrapping it out for bragging rights at the top of the table.
Their first duel finished 3-3, at Cue World, to set up an exciting rematch next week.
Dads & Lads had home advantage for the 'first leg', but they got off on the wrong foot when Ryan Johnstone and Terry Blanchard won the opening two frames for the Nats.
Jase and Mathew Lawton won the next two frames for the home team to set up a tense finish.
Pete East and Lewis Sewell then won their first frame on the black, only for Nats duo Nige Emmerson and Mick Goodwin to win the last frame and earn a share of the spoils.
Elsewhere in the section, West End B were too strong for Cromwell B as Michael Boulton, Dave Sargent, Dave Page and Tony Bywater all won 2-0, and Barry Jebson and Peter Needham shared with slam-savers Aide Richardson and Daz Burrows in a 5-1 victory.
A 2-0 from Dennis and Jamie Wallis, and singles from Dean Austwick, Dave Leen, Andy Stanley and Bill Childs, gave Healing Mens a 4-2 home win against Clee Bowls B. Scoring for the visitors were Ralph Dale, Mike Barrett, Doug Stolworthy and Dave Walton.
WITH Clee Cons B almost home and dry in the race for the Premier Section title, the main issues left to be resolved are the battle for second place and the scrap to avoid relegation.
Both those issues were in the frame when third-placed Clee Cons A entertained bottom team Blossom Way B.
The first two frames were rather tentative and finished all square as Jimmy Yeats and Paul Beasley shared with Brian O'Bee and Tony Parkin.
But on the other table it was a different story as Rob Willerton and Chris Farrow easily won their frames to put the home team 3-1 up.
A rather nervous ending saw Damon Gresham and Craig Thomas share the last two frames with visitors Kev Johnson and Kev Gowing as Cons won the match 4-2.
Healing Legion A, who are also in trouble at the wrong end of the table, entertained leaders Clee Cons B. Despite their best efforts, Healing did not manage to win a frame as Mike Bridge, Craig Waddingham, Jon Steel, Lewis Singleton, Brian Bridge and Steve Donner powered the top team to a 6-0 victory.
Second-in-the-table Linden Homes B had a tricky-looking match at Hainton A, but a 2-0 from Daz Evans and Gaz Horsfall, and singles from Anthony Jagger, Ben Goodman, Chris Madsen and Jon Leggett, saw them to a comfortable 4-2 victory. Dan Frosdick, Aaron McHugh, George Bartlett and Luke Major won the frames for the home team.
A single from Gary Wright and Drew Winship, against John Baker and Chris Brown, and a 2-0 from Barry Pearce and Craig Brocklebank put Healing Legion B 3-1 up at Linden Homes A. But Mel Pratt and Daz Braithwaite won the last two frames for Linden as they drew 3-3.
