'We can't just turn our backs on them'
"FOR goodness sake – get down there and cheer them on!"
That is the rallying call from 82-year-old football fan Daphne Baker, who has been going to watch her beloved Grimsby Town since she was nine.
Daphne, of Nicholson Road, Healing, has thrown her support behind our Be There or Blue Square campaign which is aimed at helping the Mariners to stave off the threat of relegation.
She says that every fan should do all they can to help their local club, as watching them drop to the Blue Square Premier Division would be "devastating".
She said: "The Mariners have been a massive part of my life.

Daphne Baker.
"I go to every home game and when they lose I always come back in a bad mood – my husband knows as soon as I come in the door!
"I'd be gutted if we were relegated out of the football league.
"We can't just turn our backs on them and watch them slip away. They need our help!"

“Sorry but your beloved town are going down.....it may sound a little sad but its the reality.
Look at their current form....they're not exactly winning...OK maybe that one win against Shrewsbury a few weeks back but thats it. I think that Cheltenham win over Burton was a crucial win for them as its increase the gap...that win could prove fatel.
Looks like the other teams at the bottom have started to pull away from town and picking up valuable wins....but unfortunely town are going down.”

“never been to a football match, have know interest in rooney foot, or terry somebody love life.So what I dont understand is if grimsby go out of the league, according to the fans the "town will die" In the sixties I lived in chelmsford who had a small team who got about the same number of fans as what grimsby get now, yet the town was thriving, maybe the population have found orther things to do, looking at attendence figures at 2nd division matches grimsby is not alone with low attendence”

“I admire Daphnie's resolve, the players and management should be made to explain themselves to the long supporting long suffering fans like her. You could pack the place to the rafters but you would still have to witness the same old routine on the pitch. Roy Orbison said it best when he sang it, It's Over.”
