CLEETHORPES will have a distinctly continental flavour this weekend as traders from across Europe and beyond descend upon the resort.

The promenade on the Kingsway will be packed with 50 market stalls, selling a selection of continental foods, jewellery, ornaments and other items.

Traders have travelled from places as diverse as France, Italy, Poland, South Africa, China and the West Indies for the event, which runs until Sunday.

The continental market is being held to coincide with this weekend's Cleethorpes Carnival and at 7pm tonight carnival Queen Caitlyn Rowe will switch on the resort's illuminations at Brighton Slipway.

On the first day of the continental market yesterday, visitors and residents alike were impressed by the range of items on offer.

Lynne Paxton, 39, of Cleethorpes, said: "I think it's really nice.

"There should be more of this type of thing in Cleethorpes.

"I like the tall giraffe carvings and my friend has just bought her husband some meringues."

Jackie Barkworth, 49, of Boston, is on holiday in the resort with daughter Michelle Bramwell, 10, and her friend Kiera Weaver, 9.

She said: "I think it's brilliant. We have a market like this in Boston, but this one is much better.

"I like all the carvings, especially the big spider. I think it's all set out very nicely."

Ian Hill, director of Market Place Europe, which is organising the event, said: "We have an event somewhere in the country every week, but we've never been to Cleethorpes.

"Usually we set up the market in a high street, so this is quite unusual for us. It's been good so far. There have been a lot of people down here so it looks quite promising."

Leanor Pidgen, organiser of the Cleethorpes Carnival, said: "I was absolutely thrilled when I had a look round the market.

"I really hope it goes well and that we can have them back again next year."

“I agree, these things are not advertised enough, how come we know about it the day it starts and not before?
I love markets, all the hand made/home made goods and foods.
Its exactly the same when they have markets in Victoria Street too”

    “first day was yesterday??

Once again a blinding job by NELC on advertising this event!

Good job we have the Telegraph to tell us how good these events were after they have started.
At least this one runs for a few days so we may actually have a chance to go. We went last time and it was a very nice (if expensive) little market

Im almost inclined to believe that NELC doesnt want too many visitors to events which is why they never advertise them beforehand.”
