"My own music is up-tempo pop with my own style attached with it," he said.
"I get inspiration from listening to a varied genre of music. Especially with the work that I do in Tenerife, we do so many different shows so I have to keep my styles and vocal ability open to be able to sing whatever is thrown at me.
"But I listen to the current chart just to see what's on trend. The producer I worked with has links with artists such as Britney Spears, Usher, One Direction and Maroon 5 – so you get an idea of what sound I'm going for."
James has 85 tour dates planned from this month, performing as Olly Murs and himself. He will be visiting holiday resorts such as Butlin's, Haven, Park Resorts and Pontins.
"Using the tribute route will help me gain more of a name as James," he explained.
"I am glad I get to perform as myself after most of my shows because the audience get to see me perform as myself rather than as someone else.
"It is very difficult to make it in the industry – you can't just make it overnight unless you're on the X Factor or Britain's Got Talent.
"You can make it with hard work and not just reality shows, so I'm carrying on doing what I'm doing – the hard work will pay off eventually and I will be recognised for the work I'm doing."
James will be coming to Butlin's Skegness on Friday, March 29, at 9.30pm. He will also be performing at Fantasy Island, in Skegness, on Friday, May 24, also at 9.30pm.
