Young woman back on track after battling anorexia

A DETERMINED young woman has beaten her demons to overcome anorexia.

And she has nothing but praise for the eating disorder unit that helped her do so.

The dedicated service, Rharian Fields, is based at The Gardens in the grounds of Grimsby's Diana, Princess Of Wales Hospital and will celebrate its one-year anniversary this month.

The unit is the only one of its kind in North East Lincolnshire and for Geminee Lambie, 19, it has turned her life around for the better.

She became the first in-patient at the venue last year, weighing just over five stone.

She recalls when her eating habits first altered at the age of 17 after breaking up with her boyfriend.

She said: "I had always hated the way my body looked.

"I made a promise after my relationship ended that I would change and slim down – not that I was big in the first place.

"I became obsessed with exercise and started to eat healthier foods, but it got to such a point that a bowl of Weetabix and two pieces of fruit would be all I ate in a day.

"I was exhausted all the time and started to miss college because I could not get up."

Geminee says her mum was devastated and tried her best to stop what she was doing.

However, her disorder got to such a point that she became jaundiced and was rushed into hospital.

She said: "After five days in hospital, I was transferred to a mental health clinic in North Lincolnshire.

"They put me on a waiting list for an eating disorder unit in Leeds, but I was getting to a critical state.

"Around this time Rharian Fields, in Grimsby, announced its opening in the news so I was referred there instead last year.

"I became the first in-patient and lived there permanently for six months.

"I had heard stories about other units around the country looking like hospital wards, but this one in Grimsby was home from home.

"It's bright, has lovely decor and the staff are very welcoming.

"Over the months I received therapy, support and gradually started to put weight that I needed back on.

"I cannot thank staff at the unit enough, I feel like a different person now and have been fully discharged."

Since opening, Rharian Fields has seen more than 60 out-patients and eight in-patients.

All five beds at the unit are currently taken with people from across the country.

Amanda Hind, eating disorder manager, said: "I could not be happier with our first year, it has been a great success.

"We have had a variety of patients come through the door who have all left with good results.

"I am looking forward to many more years ahead."
