After the trawlers, came the haulers
RECENT mention of the demise of the fish trains prompted Peter Hough, of Wybers Wood, to send us a selection of photographs of the transport that replaced them. Our thanks to him.

This was the scene on Grimsby Docks as the trucks were being loaded with fish for the villages. From left, driver Dave who covered Boston and all the villages to the south; driver Roy Kirman who looked after Scunthorpe and all villages north and east; driver Stewart Brookes who covered Mablethorpe and all its surrounding villages.

Insulated vans wait to be loaded in Wharncliffe Road on the Fish Docks.

Maidstone trunk waits for its load. This was a Lincoln vehicle that changed drivers at Lincoln due to the restricted driving hours.

The Nottingham depot at night, just after the trunks arrival, shows the way the small onward shipment of dock-to-door fish was undertaken by British Road Services. It was admired all over the world as the most efficient fish delivery service of its time – dock-to-door in 15 hours.
