Unique holiday centre for autistic children has vital county council backing
A LOUTH area holiday complex is providing a unique haven for families with autistic children.
The Thomas Centre, at Covenham St Bartholomew, is the only one of its kind in England, specialising in short breaks catering specifically to the needs of those with the condition.

UNITED: Thomas Centre owners Richard and Jan Crean with their son Thomas and supporters from Lincolnshire County Council and other organisations.
It was first opened five years ago by Richard and Jan Crean, who named the five-star gold-award centre after their son, Thomas, 20, who has autism as well as epilepsy and other problems.
The couple now work in partnership with Lincolnshire County Council and together have just opened a new indoor soft play area, an outdoor park for both children and adults and a go-kart track, funded by Aiming High.
Richard said: "We set this up because from our own experience and those of our friends, we found choosing a holiday to suit all our needs as a family quite difficult.
"Parents with autistic children often feel they have to explain their children's behaviour to others and often feel on edge.
"We wanted to offer a normal holiday experience, providing for all members of the family."
The 25-acre site provides lots of space which people with autism often like. Families can also have sole use of the indoor pool which helps those with heightened hearing issues.
Jonas Gibson, commissioning and developing manager at Lincolnshire County Council, said: "We first came to see the centre about 18 months ago and saw what they are doing is unique and so we wanted to work with them in this long term partnership.
"We consulted with families and one of the issues was they did not want respite, they wanted a break as a family in a relaxed environment."
Lincolnshire County Council is offering families in the county who have at least one child with special needs a subsidised short break at the Thomas Centre for £160.
Ken and Katrina King, from Holbeach, were on holiday at the centre for the first time with their two autistic sons, Ryan, 10, and Lewis, 8, through the subsidised scheme.
Katrina said: "The boys are loving it and we feel as though we are getting a break too. There is no other facility like this."
